Principals Report
Looking back at Term 3 I am pleased to say that we have survived all the rain and bouts of the flu, and somehow, we got a lot of learning and other things done across our school.
The main thing that has occurred to this term more than ever is how far our kids, staff and school community has come over the past few years. We have a lot to be proud of and to be grateful for as a school. The big highlights for me for this term include:
- Learning is our core business! This message is coming through loud and clear in all that we do across our school. You can walk into any classroom at any time and see our students focused on their learning and acting in a respectful manner that supports others to focus on their learning.
- Reading data – we are seeing so many students showing some amazing growth in their reading. As a school we do a number of screening tests each term to see what our kids know and where to go next.
- Kinder Reading – I was pleasantly surprised when I visited kinder a few weeks ago and saw that our kinder students are already blending CVC words (cat, bed etc). Our youngest students in the school have shown so much growth this past term in their understanding of sounds, well done to everyone in kinder.
- Premiers Reading Challenge was amazing. The engagement we had across our whole school with reading was amazing. Hearing kids being excited about reading and having positive conversations at home.
- Teacher Practice – Miss Creese has worked with our teachers in coaching throughout the year to constantly reflect upon and improve teaching practice. Our teachers constantly want to improve to ensure they are providing the best instruction and opportunities for our kids. I am very impressed and proud of our teachers for their dedication to our kids.
- Positive Break Times – Any break time at our school you just have to look around to see how positive the play is across all ages. Everyone has something to do, you can see students supporting each other if they can’t find something to do or are hurt (there are a lot of knee grazes). Our students are amazing in the way they respect and care for each other one a daily basis.
- Teacher Assistants, Admin Staff and Education Facility Attendants – All of these people are a multi-skilled bunch. Nothing is ever too much for them to do, even if it is outside their role at the school. They constantly look for ways to support our kids and improve our school.
Kinder 2025
As many of you know now our little school is getting bigger. At this point in time, we are moving ahead with 2 kinder classes in 2025. Miss Matthews will be teaching both classes. By having two smaller classes instead of one large class it means we can continue to provide a high standard of education and care for our students. The plan for Kinder in 2025 is:
Kinder A
- Attend on Mondays and Tuesdays
- Wednesdays – Combined day with the other kinder class
- Tuesday PE with Mr Lewinski
Kinder B
- Wednesdays – Combined day with the other kinder class
- Attend on Thursdays and Friday
- Thursday PE with Mr Lewinski
Class Placements 2025
We are currently in the very beginning stages of our 2025 class placements. If you have any information, thoughts, or friendship advice that you think we might need in relation to placements please email this to: Bagdad.Primary@education.tas.gov.au
The close off date for this information to be sent to us is Wednesday 23rd October 2023 at 3:00pm. Anything after this date will not be considered.
A reminder that teacher requests are not accepted. In addition, we are a small school and the options of which class we put students into is extremely limited.
Enrolments for 2025
As mentioned, we are working on classes and other planning for 2025. Part of this is ensuring we know who is at our school next year as it can have a big effect on our staffing. Please contact the office if you think there is information we might need to know, including:
- You are moving from our school to another for any reason
- You know if someone who might be due to come to kinder in 2025 who might not have enrolled with us yet.
School Garden
This year you would have all noticed that the area around the church has changed significantly. What was once a run down, disused area of the school now is full of garden beds, areas to sit, and other gardens.
Our students and Mr Lewinski have been hard at work up in this area and we have finally started to plant out our 10 garden beds with fruit and vegetables. The work completed by Mr Lewinski and his merry band of helpers includes:
- Installing of 6 gardens beds to give us a total of ten beds
- Installing of irrigation to enable automatic watering of our garden beds
- Netting over garden beds
- Compost bins and worm farm
- New gravel surfaces
- Greenhouse (put together finally!)
- Weeding
- Mulching
We hope to be able to use the produce we grow in our canteen, for cooking in class and put into our community swap stand.
Premier’s Reading Challenge 2024
Congratulations to all of our students for participating in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and engagement across our whole school.
Thank you to Miss Creese for her organisation of the challenge this year. There were a number of prizes and celebrations for our students, the highlight being the morning tea at Café Creese for students who read the most books throughout the challenge.
Community Swap Stand
A few weeks ago we put up a post requesting photos of any old cabinets etc that people would be willing to donate for us to use as a community swap stand. We still don’t have a cabinet of any sort.
We really are keen to get something in early term 4 for our kids to paint etc. and then get the community swap stand going ready for the summer period. If you have any furniture that might be suitable, please send us a photo.
Farewell Stacey
As many of you have heard by now our very own Stacey Jenkins has been the successful applicant for the School Business Manager Role at Brighton Primary School. Stacey will be beginning at Brighton Primary School in term 4.
On behalf of the Bagdad Primary School Community, I would like to say a big thank you to Stacey for her dedication, kindness, professionalism and never-ending energy that she has given over the years at Bagdad Primary School. I know you will all agree with me and say that we are going to be sad to see you leave us, however we all wish you the best for your new adventure.
Kind Regards
Phil Novak
